I have worked as a professional teacher of English for almost two years and in this time have gained experience of teaching students with a wide range of needs and abilities. The clients of the language companies I teach for are corporate; however, I have found that for English to be used effectively in the workplace a foundation in basic English is important.

I studied English Literature with Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia in England and graduated in 2007. Since this time I have written three books, an undertaking which has improved my understanding of the English language and has enabled me to contribute more to the knowledge of more fluent students. However, I also enjoy helping students with less experience of learning English - very often students with more basic skills make progress very quickly and take great pleasure from being able to communicate essential information. It is a pleasure to be part of a student's learning experience, whatever their level is.

When meeting a student for the first time, I ask them what they would like to achieve, and how they like to to learn. Then, with their help, I can produce a well-structured learning programme which addresses the student's needs. Sometimes, a student will be able to spend a little time learning English each day. If this is true, most of our lessons together can be spent developing speaking and listening skills, while the student poses questions about things they have been finding difficult studying at home. However, if the student is not able to work on their language skills very much at home, it is often useful for lessons to include more formal exercises, though these can be based on a theme that is interesting for the student or relevant to their work. As an experienced teacher, I have a large store of learning resources - including games and role-playing activities which help to make lessons pleasurable and relevant.

At the end of each lesson I issue students with a transcript containing corrections of errors and suggestions for new or alternative words and phrases. As part of homework, students can apply the learned words or phrases in a new situation, so that these learned items are used more naturally.

In my spare time I like to write music, socialise and take photographs of woodland scenes.

Living in Prague has been an adventure and remains exciting thanks in part to the stories I hear in the classroom!
